Motorbike holiday in the border region between East Styria and Southern Burgenland

Like many border regions, the one between East Styria and southern Burgenland can look back on a turbulent history. Thanks to its border location, the district of Oberwart in Southern Burgenland was already considered to be a strategically advantageous point during the Second World War. It later became a popular holiday destination for summer visitors from Vienna.

Today, you can tackle the Iron Curtain Tour in Southern Burgenland and follow the trail of the former Iron Curtain on the border between Austria, Hungary and Slovenia while exploring the small villages along the route with their typical guesthouses. The 3-countries motorbike tour leads pleasure cyclists along mountain roads and bends through Southern Burgenland, East Styria and the Bucklige Welt in Lower Austria. Yet the programme also contains detours into the view-packed 1,000 hills of the Viennese Alps or neighbouring Hungary to whom Burgenland used to belong. As we said: a lively history wherever you bike!

Set off on a historical tour of discovery on the “Styrian Castle Road” through the Hartbergerland, which is lined with the most beautiful castles in East Styria. The area is one of the regions in Europe with the most castles and palaces. The route has a total of 1,001 km and 37 palaces, castles, monasteries and historical fortifications and leads through two states to Slovenia. Sometimes romantic, sometime dramatic.
