Like many border regions, the one between East Styria and southern Burgenland can look back on a turbulent history. Thanks to its border location, the district of Oberwart in Southern Burgenland was already considered to be a strategically advantageous point during the Second World War. It later became a popular holiday destination for summer visitors from Vienna.

Today, you can tackle the Iron Curtain Tour in Southern Burgenland and follow the trail of the former Iron Curtain on the border between Austria, Hungary and Slovenia while exploring the small villages along the route with their typical guesthouses. The 3-countries motorbike tour leads pleasure cyclists along mountain roads and bends through Southern Burgenland, East Styria and the Bucklige Welt in Lower Austria.
