Borderland tour

Hochgurgl, Alpenhotel Laurin - Ötz - Telfs - Mösern - Krün (D) - Vorderriß - Eng Alm/Hinterriß - excursion destination "Großer Ahornboden" - return - Krün - Mittenwald - Leutasch - Telfs - Barwies - Mötz - Ötz - Hochgurgl

Start....: Alpenhotel Laurin Out of the valley on the B186 we ride to the valley exit, at the first roundabout we keep right and then turn right again at the second roundabout and follow the direction to the east (Ötztal-Bahnhof, Haiming, Silz). Our tour today takes us via the villages of Silz and Telfs, in Telfs we follow the road signs towards Mösern, Seefeld onto the high plateau to Seefeld and on across the border in Scharnitz to Mittenwald. We soon reach Krün and continue to Vorderriß. From Vorderriß we turn right and take the road to our destination today, the "Großer Ahornboden". The area is overgrown with numerous maple trees up to 600 years old. The reason for the development of the large maple population on these pastures may lie in the fact that this large number of trees was able to develop over the centuries in times of cattle epidemics, which would otherwise not have been possible for a pasture area. Today, active forest management ensures that dead trees are replaced by new plantings. The entire area is part of the Karwendel Alpine Park.

Toll road from Wallgau into the Karwendel

The Karwendel mountains block the direct connection. Access is via a toll road from Wallgau to Vorderriß - the toll road from the Bavarian Isar valley around Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau to Vorderriss is around 13 kilometres long. The toll road from Wallgau is a scenic dream, but in some places the bends and the narrow road width require careful and measured driving. The journey is a great experience, beautiful natural scenery with parking bays invite you to stop.

On the return journey, from Mittenwald via the Leutasch border crossing down to Telfs and over the Mieminger Plateau to Barwies, where we turn left at the roundabout back down into the Inn Valley to Mötz. From there back into the Ötztal and back to Hochgurgl.
