South Tyrol round
Start......... Alpenhotel Laurin, this time our tour takes us to all three parts of Tyrol. Immediately after the hotel driveway we turn right onto the Timmelsjoch road, after approx. 2 km we reach the TopMountainMotorcycleMuseum (the highest motorbike museum in Europe, with a unique motorbike collection of over 200 exhibits - but we will visit this another time) ...the distance from the hotel is so close that today, due to the slightly longer tour, we immediately set off towards the top of the TImmelsjoch pass. (Timmelsjoch pass road
- (Timmelsjoch pass road, toll road) The first-class road, which almost rhythmically hugs the natural terrain, may tempt you to drive fast, but keep an eye out for cows or sheep/goats along the entire route, as they graze here throughout the summer. Once we reach the top of the pass (after about 15 minutes), we first enjoy the phenomenal view of the Stubai Alps and the Texel Group. Our onward journey takes us over the south ramp of the Timmelsjoch to St. Leonhard in the Passeier Valley. On the south side of the Timmelsjoch, please be aware of parked cars on the roadside or cyclists, so keep your speed up and enjoy the scenery. The road has been greatly improved in recent years, and the bends and hairpin bends are sensational fun. Once we arrive in St. Leonhard, we head towards the centre of the village at the first roundabout and immediately head uphill towards the Jaufenpass at the next one. The pass road to the Jaufenpass is a little narrower and the bends are sometimes less rhythmic, but this improves with increasing altitude and from the tree line the road becomes more "open" again. After reaching the top of the pass, we are rewarded with a sensational view. Right at the highest point of the pass there is also the opportunity to enjoy a really good espresso. (Panoramahütte Jaufenpass) Our tour continues downhill to Sterzing where, immediately after reaching the valley floor, we take the turn-off to the right onto the SS 508 (Sarntaler- and Pfitscherjochstraße). The road winds its way back uphill past Weißenbach and into the Sarntal valley. We then pass under the cable car to San Genesio shortly before Bolzano, keep to the right and follow our navigation past the barracks in the direction of the Wine Road. Now the beautiful vineyards of the wine route spread out alongside the road. We reach the villages of Siebeneich and Terlan (particularly famous for its excellent Pinot Blanc). Here we turn right and cycle uphill on the SP 98 towards Mölten. We pass the villages of Vöran, Hafling and after a short downhill ride we reach the Schenna roundabout, where we take the third exit onto Labererstraße, cross the vineyards and continue slightly uphill onto Fragsburgstraße. We pass the Hotel Castel Fragsburg and after a short ascent we reach the Gasthof Greiter. (After a rest, we return to the Schenna roundabout and take the second exit down the mountain towards Meran. We drive through Obermais and follow the signs on the Schenna road (Jaufenpass, Timmelsjoch). When we reach the Jaufenpass state road, we turn right and follow the signs for Jaufenpass/Timmelsjoch as far as St. Leonhard. Here we follow the navigation and reach the Timmelsjoch-Hochalpenstraße. From St. Leonhard we cycle 35 kilometres to Hochgurgl over the Timmelsjoch. Pure pleasure and the one or other hairpin bend will make every motorcyclist grin with joy. Maximum motorcycling enjoyment in an intoxicating mountain landscape of the Central Alps leads us back to the Alpenhotel Laurin.
